Cleantech

LUSEP’s largest cluster with a strong tradition of cross-sector collaboration. Early-stage to global organisations working at the forefront of accelerating net zero solutions.

Expertise

Accelerating green hydrogen

LUSEP is co-located with one of the largest Green Hydrogen research groups in the UK. Loughborough University’s cross-disciplinary low-cost green hydrogen R&D spans production to end use including storage, distribution, combustion, policy, economics and safety, sustainability analysis and lifecycle management. Novel research portfolio includes a battery-electrolyser solution which has attracted £12M+ project-based grant investment.

Expertise

Intelligent Energy

Intelligent Energy delivers a range of fuel cell products based on patented fuel cell technology. The product range includes the world’s highest power density fuel cell for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and systems providing power from 800W to 300kW+ for applications including automotive, aerospace, power generation, telecoms, marine, rail and materials handling. The company originated from Loughborough University research and its global headquarters remain on LUSEP.

Energy & Low Carbon

Expertise & specialist facilities

Loughborough University’s energy and low carbon capabilities reflect challenges throughout the cycle from new technology development to real world system performance and end use energy demand – set in a sustainable and clean low carbon context. Expertise domains combine engineering and physical sciences, detailed computer-based simulation capability, economic, policy and socio-technical research.

Expertise

Smart green energy

Since 2017, Loughborough University has worked with the UK PV industry standards body, MCS certified as well as the leading solar trade association, Solar Energy UK, and their members to apply its modelling and simulation research to support the development of new PV standards, consumer codes, industry services and policy recommendations.

Expertise

Closing the loop

Loughborough University’s collaboration with Plastic Energy is safely recycling plastics to create a range of useful materials. Plastic Energy’s Plastic2Plastic process reduces the environmental impact of plastic production and end-of-life processing. Widespread adoption will reduce our carbon footprint and help to curb pollution.
